Our Story

In March of 1905, seventeen Seventh-day Adventists met for the first time in Lodi to worship the Lord. In that same year, the Lodi Central Seventh-day Adventist Church was organized. In 1907 the first church school opened it’s doors in a room at the church, and during the same year the German families decided to build their own church, which became known as the Hilborn church.

Lodi Academy and Normal School, which is now Lodi Academy and Lodi Elementary School, located on the corner of S. Central Avenue and Kettleman Lane, was established by the two churches in 1908. Over the years many families living in Lodi have appreciated these two schools for their community service, the ideals to which they hold, and the excellent educational opportunities they provide.

On June 22, 1974, the members of Lodi Central Church moved into their new Church facility located at 1260 W. Century Blvd., which is now English Oaks Seventh-day Adventist Church.

It is located just across the parking lot from Golden Oaks Village, a retirement community, which is owned and operated by a nonprofit corporation, whose board of directors is composed of local Seventh-day Adventists. English Oaks is just a small part of a world-wide Church with over 89,000 churches and companies by the close of 1998, and more than 10,163,000 members. Last year alone, 818,754 persons chose to join the Seventh-day Adventist Church Family.  Being family, community, and mission minded, the Church operates the largest Protestant Educational system in the world today. Its hospitals and sanitariums, clinics and dispensaries may be found in many countries around the world with a total of more than 520. There are missions in 205 countries and areas of the world with publications and oral work using 748 different languages. ADRA, Adventist Development and Relief Agency International, is involved in 121 countries and areas of the world, with a total of 18,299,096 benefitting from their projects.

The Lord has blessed us in a tremendous way, and to Him we give thanks. If you are interested in obtaining additional information on the history of the Church, you may do so by going to http://www.adventist.org/history/.
